Here are some things to consider before hiring a skip:

  • Skip size
  • The type of waste you’re planning on filling it with

Standard Skip Sizes

It’s important that you choose a skip of an appropriate size for the work you’ll be doing. A midi skip would be ideal for domestic waste, whereas a Roll-on-Roll-off skip would be appropriate for large-scale, commercial projects where copious amounts of waste would needs to be disposed of.

Do I Need a Skip Permit/License?

Skip on road outside semi detached house

Generally, you will need a skip permit/license if you wish to place the skip on:

  • A public road
  • Council owned land

Sometimes, the skip hire company will acquire a skip permit/license. However, depending on the area you live in, you may need to do this yourself. The skip hire company will be able to best advise you on the next steps to take, should this situation arise.

Restrictions

  • You cannot place a skip on a pavement
  • You do not need a skip license if the skip is being placed on land that you privately own
  • You may need to attach safety lights and markings on or around the skip, including:
  • Reflective markings
  • Safety lamps
  • Traffic cones
  • Name and telephone number of the skip hire company

To find out the exact rules, contact your local council.

Fines and penalties

You can be fined if you have not acquired the appropriate permit/license, if the skip has been placed on a pavement, or if you do not have safety lights or markings on or around you skip, if placed on a road. The amount currently stands at £1,000.

How High Can I Fill My Skip?

You must only fill your skip to the height of its sides. If the skip is overfilled, the driver can refuse to collect it. Transport laws makes it illegal to move or transport a skip which is not level-loaded.
