Can skips go on the pavement or road?

You can place a skip on a pavement or road, but you will need a skip permit to do so. This is to ensure that the skip isn’t a hazard to pedestrians or road users. You could be fined up to £1000 if you place your skip on public property without permission.

Delivering a skip onto a road is typically quite easy for our delivery drivers, as long as there is enough room to lower the skip to the ground. However, one of the drawbacks of placing your skip on a pavement or road is that it is at risk of passersby emptying their own waste into it. 

How to get a skip hire permit

Someone will need to contact the local council to arrange for a skip permit. You may have to do this yourself, depending on the skip hire company you choose.

Can you put a skip on the grass?

You can put a skip on the grass as long as it is private property, such as a front garden. 

You need to make sure there are no obstacles that would prevent the delivery vehicle from reaching the grass and lowering the skip down onto it.

Please be aware, however, that placing a skip onto your front garden could potentially damage the grass.

Can you put a skip outside someone else’s house?

You can’t put your skip on your neighbour’s private property. However, you may be able to get a permit to place your skip on a public road, even if the public road is nearer to your neighbour’s house than your own.

We recommend speaking to your neighbour before requesting a permit to place the skip on a nearby road. Not only is this polite, but they may have some items they wish to throw away as well, and you could potentially split the cost of the skip.
