Commercial Skip Hire Guide

As a commercial entity, you’re bound to produce a significant amount of waste that can be difficult to keep on top of. Though you may have bins scattered around your premises, it is wise to make use of a professional skip hire service when undertaking larger projects or renovations within your company.

Luckily, hiring a skip for your business couldn’t be any easier. Simply follow this guide to start disposing of your commercial waste safely, legally and efficiently.

When should you hire a skip?

Skips are typically hired whenever a business produces a larger volume of waste than is typically produced in day-to-day operations. This could be due to a particularly large project or a business revamp. Typically skips are hired for:

  • Demolitions and refurbishments
  • Office or retail unit revamps
  • Office clear outs
  • Moving premises
  • Landscape projects

What you can and cannot place in a skip

For your own safety and the safety of our staff, some items are prohibited from being placed in our skips. Please make sure you are disposing of acceptable materials before hiring a skip. Placing prohibited items in a skip could land you a hefty fine.

The following items can be placed in a skip:

  • Food and food packaging
  • Furniture
  • Carpet
  • Non-electrical fixtures and fittings
  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Wood
  • Tiles
  • Ceramic
  • Empty tins
  • Cardboard
  • Solidified paint
  • Polystyrene
  • Green waste

The following items can’t be placed in a skip:

  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Batteries
  • Electrical equipment
  • Asbestos
  • Plasterboard
  • Toxic waste
  • Unshredded papers
  • Clinical waste
  • Hard drives with personal data
  • Flammable substances

The different types of skip available

It’s important to choose the right skip for your needs. Choose a skip that is too small and you could be burdened with leftover waste; choose a skip that is too large and you’ll have wasted money on excess skip space you didn’t need.

Camiers offers skips ranging from 4-yard midi skips to 40-yard roll-on/roll-off skips. For the specific dimensions of each one of our skip sizes, visit our skip size page.

Skip permits

A skip permit is required if you wish to place your skip on public property. Be aware that if you opt to place your skip on public property, you may be required to use reflective equipment, lights or traffic cones to make the skip visible to road users or pedestrians.

Camiers can arrange a skip permit on your behalf to ensure that you are legally permitted to place our skip in a public space.

Location and access

Location and access are two factors to consider when choosing whether to place your skip on public or private grounds.

The skip must not impede entrances and exits. That includes access to your own premises as well as your neighbours’. It must also not block any fire exits.

You must also consider whether your grounds are durable enough to withstand the weight of our lorries. Commercial skips and the lorries that transport them will be significantly heavier than most vehicles entering your premises, so you need to make sure your grounds can accommodate – please ask and we can advise.
